SUMMARY:James Webb Space Telescope: Lifting the Veil on the Universe with D
 r. Kathryn Flanagan
DESCRIPTION:The James Webb Space Telescope is the largest astrophysics miss
ion in NASA's history\, launched on December 25\, 2021. JWST was designed
to see the first galaxies forming shortly after the Big Bang\, and has bee
n nicknamed the 'First Light Machine." But its infrared sensitivity allows
it to peer into dusty environments\, making it the perfect instrument to
explore the regions where stars and planets form\, and to trace how galaxi
es have evolved over time.\n\nLast June\, JWST released its first science
images and stands poised to transform astronomy.  Dr. Kathryn Flanagan\,
astronomer emerita at the Space Telescope Science Institute\, will introdu
ce us to this marvelous facility and its first science discoveries.\n\nDr.
Flanagan will share stunning images captured by the telescope and speak a
bout how this mind-bending technological innovation recently made history
by observing stars and galaxies from 13.5 billion years ago.\n\nClick here
read about Dr. Kathryn Flanagan\n\n\nAbout Dr. Kathryn Flanagan\n\nDr. Ka
thryn Flanagan holds an astronomer emerita appointment at the Space Telesc
ope Science Institute (STScI)\, where she has served as JWST mission head\
, Deputy Director and Interim Director. The Institute is responsible for t
he science operations of the Hubble Space Telescope\, as well as the missi
on and science operations of its successor\, the James Webb Space Telescop
e (JWST).\nDr. Flanagan came to the Institute in 2007 to head the Mission
Office for JWST\, with responsibility for developing the JWST Science and
Operations Center. In her early career\, she earned her PhD in physics at
MIT\, where she began working in the field of X-ray astronomy\, with speci
al interest in developing new instruments for space. She became part of th
e research staff at Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and MIT\, and sh
e has worked on multiple flight instruments.\nShe has participated in NASA
’s advisory structure\, co-chairing strategic planning documents and ser
ving on advisory committees. She has been active in astronomical community
organizations\, and has been honored by election as a Fellow of the Ameri
can Association for the Advancement of Science. She has been active in edu
cation\, beginning with service as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching math a
nd physics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, and is a strong advoc
ate for science outreach to the public and the “next generation.” Clos
e\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served following the presentation.\n\nRe
commended for adults and children aged 10 and older.\n\nWe encourage you t
o sign up soon to secure a spot because this event is expected to be well
attended. Registrations will be checked at the door.\n\nSponsored by ACE\,
  the Adult Community Engagement Group.
