Singing is a spiritual practice that connects us in music and friendship during a time that can feel isolating. For many of us, singing as a worshipping community is an essential part of faith development that unites us -  body, mind and spirit - with the Creator, each other, and with ourselves, allowing our prayers to live and breathe (literally and metaphorically) throughout our daily lives. For that reason, we are committed to maintaining an active choral program at Shir Tikva, led by our Choir Director Susan DeSelms and Cantor Hollis Schachner.

  • Tenors and Basses (typically men, but not always) will meet from 7-8:10pm.
  • Sopranos and Altos (typically women, but not always!) will meet from 8-9:10pm.

There will be a 10-15 minute period of overlap, allowing us to see each other, and pray together as a single body.
Here's what you can expect from Zoom Choir:

  1. We will warm up our voices with a series of vocal exercises that help us become vital instruments.
  2. We mute ourselves, and learn/sing one or more prayers together that you might sing on any given Friday night.
  3. We spend some time learning a piece that we'd like to record as an ensemble. (Susan DeSelms will provide recordings for the choir members to use in advance of rehearsal, as much or as little as desired.)
  4. Those who are willing unmute themselves and sing and receive encouraging and helpful feedback, geared toward making singing easier, more meaningful, and more beautiful.
  5. We will begin/end with prayers for the community and each other, with a final Sh'ma.

To participate fully, you will ideally need a private space with room to move around and sing loudly, with a solid wifi connection. You will also need a pair of headphones, and a recording device (smartphone, second computer) to record yourself with if you choose to participate in the collaborative recordings. All music will be sent out electronically - sheet music, and audio recordings. In advance, know that we are limited by the constraints of Zoom. It is what it is. But there is still a lot we can do together to keep Shir Tikva - our "Song of Hope" vibrant and strong.

To join us, please contact to Karen Edwards ( to be put on our choir email list.
