Tikkun Olam - Dick’s Sporting Goods Appreciation for Curbing Gun Violence
March 18, 2018 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

This Sunday at 12:30 pm The Temple Shir Tikva community will be gathering at Dick’s in Natick following Mitzvah Day. We will purposely spend money at the store, provide thank you cards to the Dick’s staff and donate a portion of the goods purchased to the Boys and Girls Club of Waltham on behalf of TST.

Our token of appreciation is in recognition of Dick’s taking automatic assault weapons off of their shelves and raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21, following the Parkland, FL shooting three weeks ago.

Please join us for Mitzvah Day at the temple and then again at Dick’s from 12:30 to 1:30 for this important show of unity and solidarity. We can take this visible step to help curb gun violence as a community.

Cantor Hollis Schachner sent a letter to the CEO of Dick’s recently – read it below. The sermon delivered by Cantor Schachner on Friday, March 2 can be read here.

Letter to Dick’s Sporting Goods Corporate Office. Please share this message with your CEO Edward Stack:

My name is Hollis Schachner and I am the Cantor of Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland, MA. Our community wants to thank Dick’s Sporting Goods, and in particular, your CEO, for stepping in to lead where our legislators have been unwilling or unable to act. We know that businesses take risks when they take public stands on contentious issues and we want to support and reinforce your brave decision to stop selling assault-style rifles and raising the minimum purchasing age to 21. Our synagogue is planning a public show of support to our local Dick’s store in Natick, Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon, March 18th . We will meet there to purchase items for use in our Temple, our homes, and as donations for underserved communities.

We want your corporate decision-makers to know that your stand aligns with the Jewish value of Pikuach Nefesh—the imperative to preserve human life. Our Talmud teaches that if we save one life it is as if we have saved the entire universe (Sanhedrin 4:5). If your action can help save even one life, you will have taken an important first step on what promises to be a long journey towards making America a greater, healthier, and safer county for all of her inhabitants. We are with you in this hard work and thank you for your leadership.
