An Italian Renaissance Shabbat: The Songs of Salamone Rossi

Friday March 9th, 6:15 pm at Temple Shir Tikva during Simchat Shabbat Services

Sunday, March 11th, Instrumental prelude and service 10:45 am at United Parish in Brookline

The Choirs of Temple Shir Tikva and United Parish in Brookline are joining together for our annual Interfaith Choral Collaboration. Join us as we step back in time four hundred years to experience the Sabbath as would the Italian Renaissance Jewish community.  For this special Shabbat we will be exploring the gorgeous music of Salamone Rossi, a great sacred and secular composer whose work established choral singing as integral to Jewish worship, and who planted the seeds for all sacred choir music still sung in synagogues around the world today.  In addition, Rossi was also famous for the instrumental music he composed in service to the Court of Mantua. (You can learn more about this fascinating historical figure and Jewish artistic hero here:

As always, we will welcome Minister of Music Susan DeSelms, the Reverend Kent French, and the Chancel Choir from United Parish in Brookline to our bima, and our clergy and choir will join them in their majestic space on Sunday morning.  Additonally, we are thrilled that this year Vivian Montgomery will be bringing her Early Music students from the Longy School of Music and professional instrumentalists from the Early Music ensemble she has founded, Eudamonia: A Purposeful Period Band ( .

This service will be accompanied by these period instruments, such as chamber organ, theorbo, and recorder, and will recreate the atmosphere of prayer that belonged to the Jews of sixteenth century Italy.

We hope that you will join us for Simchat Shabbat at TST on Friday, as well as Sunday morning worship in Brookline as we continue on our interfaith journey with our friends at United Parish. The United Parish is located at 210 Harvard Street, Brookline.
