Pillars of Shir Tikva Religious School Curriculum
There are six major pillars within our Religious School
Curriculum. Each is introduced in an age-appropriate way so
students can appreciate how these learnings are part of our Jewish life
and community. They are:
Hebrew Language Study:
Hebrew is the key that unlocks the treasure contained within our Jewish
texts and Torah. It is the language we use to communicate with
God. It is the mutual language that connects us with any Jewish
person in the world. The Hebrew curriculum of the Religious
School includes Tefillah (prayer), Jewish Life vocabulary and elements
of Modern Hebrew. The major goal of Modern Hebrew is to enable our
students to develop a connection with Hebrew as a living language as
well as to reinforce Hebrew reading skills.
Jewish Studies
Jewish studies spans the spectrum of topics in grades K-2, including
the Synagogue, Jewish holidays, Shabbat, Jewish values in the home and
in community, the study of Mitzvot, and Tikkun Olam. As students
enter Grade 3 and beyond, Chai: Learning for Jewish Life curriculum,
published by the Union for Reform Judaism, is utilized. The
Jewish sages teach us that “the world is sustained on three
things: Torah, Avodah and Gemilut Chasadim” (Avot 1:2).
These pursuits – study, worship, and deeds of loving kindness
– provide the framework within which Jews build their
relationships with God, with one another and with the world. Intrinsic
to all this is Israel, Am Yisrael (the people of Israel), Eretz Yisrael
(the land of Israel) and K’lal Yisrael (the global community of
Israel). Accordingly, Torah, Israel, Avodah and Gemilut Chasadim
are the four main topics for the school’s Jewish studies modules.
Torah Module
Torah is an ongoing dialogue between the text and its students. Torah
is real in our daily lives; it is with us wherever we are. Developing
the skills to study Torah is essential to integrating Torah into our
lives.
Avodah Module
Avodah (worship) is the work we do to find sacred connections to God,
community, and self. Engaging in the work of avodah can bring order,
beauty, meaning and insight to our lives.
Gemilut Chasadim Module
We have a responsibility to perform acts of gemilut chasadim (deeds of
loving kindness) to make the world a better, holier place.
Israel Module
We have a responsibility to learn about, understand, affirm and support
our historic bond with Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel)
